Before & After
Kona Kai West Boat Dock
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (CNN) -- A major earthquake struck 75 miles south of Fairbanks, cracking roads, crumbling support mechanisms for the trans-Alaska pipeline and triggering mudslides, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, officials said Sunday. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake's preliminary magnitude at 7.9. The earthquake struck November 3rd at 1:12 p.m. (5:12 p.m. ET) and was felt throughout the state, the Alaska Earthquake Information Center reported. It was centered 45 miles east-northeast of Cantwell in the state's remote interior. It was the largest earthquake known to occur in the world this year.
What was surprising was, that something like that in Alaska could have had an effect on Kona Kai. Well, it did. For those of us that live on the canal and were here that day, it was just plain weird. We are used to the waves rolling down the canal heading for the boat ramp and sometimes like an echo, returning. Barge traffic and north winds do that. It was splashing from side to side. The water level raised 2-3 feet, racing width wise from piers on one side to the piers on the other. Boards were knocked off walkways and boathouses. The west boat ramp dock sustained substantial damage.
The east dock was also damaged, but to a lesse degree.
The board of directors met to discuss the situation. Bids were taken and
a contract was awarded. Carlos Tovar made the necessary repairs. The before
and after pictures says it all. Thanks for the good work Carlos.
